IMC-USA celebrates India's Independence Day, turns six on August 15th

Indian Muslim Council - USA (IMC-USA), an advocacy group working toward safeguarding India's pluralist and tolerant ethos, extends its best wishes to all Indians on the occasion of the 61st anniversary of India's Independence and calls on all Indians to remember the message of Mahatma Gandhi whose non-violent struggle was key to India's independence. August 15th, 2008 also marks the sixth anniversary of the Indian Muslim Council - USA, which was established on this day in 2002. In the last six years, IMC-USA has worked with various Indian organizations of different persuasions to advance the cause of social justice and communal harmony.

IMC-USA urges State Department to deny visa to pogrom politician Narendra Modi

Indian Muslim Council-USA (IMC-USA), an advocacy group dedicated to safeguarding India ’s pluralist and tolerant ethos, has urged the State Department to refuse US visa to Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of the State of Gujarat, India on the grounds of his continued subversion of state apparatus against securing justice to the victims of 2002 pogroms and institutional violations of religious freedom of the minorities in his state.

IMC has learned that Narendra Modi is actively trying to obtain an US visa in order to rehabilitate his image as a pogrom politician and clear the grounds for moving into the national politics in India. IMC-USA, one of the founding organizations of the Coalition Against Genocide (CAG) campaign that successfully lobbied to prevent Modi from getting an US visa in 2005, is reviving the campaign to ensure that Narendra Modi is not allowed to enter the United States.

The fourth National Convention of the Indian Muslim Council - USA , an advocacy group dedicated to protecting the rights of minorities and promoting pluralism, was a huge success.

The event focused on the theme, "The Idea of India: Challenges & Prospects," and was held in Chicago , IL on 31st May, 2008. It was attended by over 450 people. The speakers included activists from different ethnic and religious communities as well as experts and leaders from Human Rights groups. The keynote address was given by Tarun Tejpal, CEO of Tehelka Newsmagazine.

Event to focus on "The Idea of India : Challenges & Prospects" theme

Chicago, IL. Wednesday, May 28, 2008: Several distinguished speakers from around the world are set to converge in Chicago on May 31st 2008 to address the 4th national convention of the Indian Muslim Council - USA and reflect on the prospects and challenges to the "Idea of India".

Martha Nussbaum, one of America’s most prominent philosophers and listed among the world's top 100 intellectuals by Foreign Policy and Prospect magazines, will be speaking on "Strengthening India’s Secular Democracy" at the Convention. Martha Nussbaum's recent book "The Clash Within: Democracy, Religious Violence, and India ’s Future" is critically acclaimed as a "sophisticated analysis of democracy and religious extremism" in India.

US Congressman Mr. Keith Ellison, a Democrat from Minnesota , who is unable to attend the event, will be addressing the audience through a video message.
